Button Down Oversized Cardigan

Cosy and street stylish at the same time, which shouldn’t be possible.

Why it earns its wardrobe spot

Anything that screams cosy has my attention, and an oversized button-down cardigan is about as cosy as knitwear gets without turning into a dressing gown. The volume is the point: it’s meant to swamp you slightly, which is what makes it comfortable rather than shapeless.

Worn over jeans it reads relaxed. Worn with comfy trousers and a bralet underneath it turns into something closer to street style, which is a lot of range for one piece of knitwear. Buttons give you a closed version for a cold morning and an open one for everything else, so it covers more of the year than a jumper does.

WHO WEARS THIS

For the days when comfortable and put-together need to be the same outfit.

The Woman Who Dresses for Comfort First: She’s not compromising on cosy. This is the version that still looks considered when she leaves the house.

The Oversized Silhouette Fan: Volume on top, something fitted underneath. A shape she already knows works for her.

The Person Who Lives in Knitwear from October: One cardigan doing five days a week is a reasonable ask if it’s the right one.

The Layerer With a Cold House: Buttoned up at breakfast, open by lunch. It handles a badly heated flat better than a jumper can.
