Why it earns its wardrobe spot
Anything that screams cosy has my attention, and an oversized button-down cardigan is about as cosy as knitwear gets without turning into a dressing gown. The volume is the point: it’s meant to swamp you slightly, which is what makes it comfortable rather than shapeless.
Worn over jeans it reads relaxed. Worn with comfy trousers and a bralet underneath it turns into something closer to street style, which is a lot of range for one piece of knitwear. Buttons give you a closed version for a cold morning and an open one for everything else, so it covers more of the year than a jumper does.
