Kindle

Three books, no extra weight, and a screen you can actually read in the sun.

What makes it a brilliant present

If you’ve ever tried to read your phone on a sun lounger, you already know the problem. A Kindle screen doesn’t fight the light, which makes it the difference between reading on a beach day and giving up after four minutes of squinting.

I love a physical book, and this hasn’t replaced that. What it has changed is holidays: instead of committing to three paperbacks chosen a week in advance, I can follow whatever mood I’m in when I get there. The weight saving in a suitcase is the practical argument. Being able to change your mind is the better one.

WHO’LL LOVE THIS

For the reader in your life who packs books before clothes.

The Holiday Reader: She gets through three books in a week and used to plan her luggage around it. This solves that permanently.

The Beach Day Regular: Phones are unreadable in bright sun. A Kindle is the only screen that works out there, which is the whole argument for owning one.

The Commuter Who Reads Standing Up: One hand, no page-holding, no bent paperback spine in a bag. Considerably easier on a packed train.

The Person Running Out of Shelf Space: She’s not going to stop buying books. This just means the flat stops filling up quite so fast.

Just a heads-up: Sometimes if a product goes out of stock or gets discontinued on Amazon, the link may take you to a similar item instead of the exact one you clicked on (like from a Pin). As an Amazon Associate, we may earn a small commission if you decide to buy - at no extra cost to you. Happy, savvy shopping!

FOR ANYONE WHO REPACKS THEIR BAG THREE TIMES.
